Frequently Asked Questions
What issues can counselling help with?
Counselling can support you through a wide range of emotional, relational, and psychological challenges. Common areas include anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, grief, self-esteem, life transitions, and relationship difficulties. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed or simply want to explore personal growth, therapy offers a confidential and safe space to understand yourself better, develop healthier ways of coping, and a space to provide inner healing.
What can I expect in the first session?
The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. We'll talk about what brings you to counselling, your goals, and any concerns you may have. I’ll go through a comprehensive assessment to get a full background and understanding of who you are and all the factors going into your situation. From there, we’ll come up with a plan collaboratively to make sure your goals are all met. I’ll explain how the process works and answer any questions you might have. There’s no pressure to share more than you feel comfortable with—we go at your pace.
How long is each session, and how often do I need to come?
Sessions are typically 50 minutes long. Sometimes, clients prefer extended sessions, so 90-minute and 120-minute sessions are also offered. The frequency of sessions can vary depending on your needs—some clients come weekly or biweekly, while others attend monthly. We’ll discuss a plan that works best for you and can adjust as needed throughout your counselling journey.
Are our sessions confidential?
Yes, confidentiality is a cornerstone of counselling. What you share in session stays private, with a few exceptions required by law—such as if there’s a risk of serious harm to yourself or others, or any suspected child or elder abuse and if my notes are subpoenaed by a court of law. I’ll review confidentiality in more detail during our first session so you feel informed and safe, and will be reminded throughout.
How are your services offered?
I offer services through a variety of formats, including in-person, online and through phone services.
Where is your office located?
Our beautiful office is located at 316-1095 Mckenzie Avenue in Victoria, British Columbia. Our office is wheelchair accessible. Please come see us, where you’ll be greeted by our wonderful front desk staff.
Do I need a referral to see you?
No referral is necessary—you can book directly. I work with individuals aged 13 years and above, students, couples, families, immigrants, refugees, veterans and STEM professionals. If you're unsure whether counselling is right for you, I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation to help you decide.
Are services covered by insurance?
Many extended health benefits plans in British Columbia cover Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs) or Canadian Certified Counsellors (CCCs). It's best to check with your provider to confirm your coverage details. My services are covered for ICBC clients and any veterans, and I do provide direct billing for these clients. I do provide direct billing for Pacific Blue Cross, Sunlife and theclaimsXchange. At this time, counselling is not covered by MSP in BC. I provide invoices and receipts that you can submit for reimbursement if eligible.
